16. Milwaukee Brewers 1982

Im going to give you my predictions on who will win and when it's done Im sure they will be completely off.  Well here goes.

In the first divsion, we have a ton of great pitching duels here.  The 1909 Pirates are the #1 seed in this divison and they very well could take this division.  If I had to choose a sleeper, I like the 13th seeded 1919 Chicago Whitesox.  The Blacksox.  They start off against the 1904 Giants and I think they can beat them.  I don't see them going all the way but I can see them winning maybe the first 2 rounds.  But in the end, I think the 1906 or 1909 Cubs are going to end up winning this division.  I feel they can survive these long Best of 15 matchups better than anyone else here.

My Prediction #2 1906  Chicago Cubs over #5 1909 Chicago Cubs in the division finals.

In the second division, you have 3 of the top four seeded teams as NYYankees.  The 1927 Yankees have long been regarded among historians as the best team ever and its hard to argue that.  Thats why they come in as the #1 seed in their division and a 3 to 1 favorite to win it all.  While I think they are one of the greatest, I just don't think they can beat out the 1939 Yankees.  There's some very tough matchups here.  As a sleeper, I like the #10 seed Washington Senators beating the #7 seed 1946 Redsox and then moving on at least one more round.  The 31 A's will pose some great challenges too, but in the end, I see

My Prediction: #4 NYYankees 1939 over the #1 NYYankees 1927

In the third division, we have a very diverse group of teams.  To start off with an upset, I like the Miracle Mets of 1969 beating the #1 seed 1975 Cincinati Reds in a stunner.  I also think the #10 seeded 72 A's will make it real far in this tournament.  However, to make a choice,...

My Prediction: #5 Brooklyn Dodgers 1953 over the 1968 Detroit tigers.

On to the final division..  This division will have some big fireworks and high scoring games.  First off, I think I will pick a sweep by the #1 seed 98 Yankees over the 82 Brewers.  This one wont even be close.  Those 98 Yankees will definitely move on far in this tournament.  I like the matchup of the 88 A's and the Bash Brothers taking on the 93 Giants.  But in the end I think pitching is going to overcome

My Prediction: #8 Atlanta Braves 1993 over the #5 St Louis Cards

So my final four is :

1906 Cubs
1939 Yankees
1953 Dodgers
1993 Braves

I see the Cubs and Ed Walsh and that pitching staff outlasting the 1939 Yankees in a squeaker.  And I like the tough 1953 Brooklyn dodgers to beat up on those Atlanta Braves.

So in the finals, I like the 1906 Cubs to beat the Dodgers and be reigned as the World Champion!

So we'll see what happens.  The first of the serieses will start soon!
Here's a brief summary of the teams in the tourney.  The NY Yankees by far lead all teams with 11 entries.  After that comes the Giants and the Red sox with 5 entries and then down to  4 entries with Detroit and  St Louis and the Dodgers.  Most of the teams are spread out in years, so you wont see 3 seasons in a row of a team, even if they won 3 world series in a row.  So you probably wont see more than 2 instances of any player.  Although it looks like Babe Ruth will mutliple entries in there as there are 3 Yankee teams from the 20s and early 30s in there along with a few of his RedSox teams when he was a pitcher.  So we have a very diverse competition, it should be very interesting.  Soon Ill make a post telling who I think is going to win each division.

How am I choosing the best baseball teams

Who is the best baseball team ever?  That is the age old question.  There's no definitive way to determine this.  Great teams were in different eras with different players and cultures, which makes it impossible to compare exactly.  What I want to do is to run a simulation of the top teams and see who comes out on top.  This will not answer the question, but it will be fun and interesting trying.

March madness ended a few weeks back so it gave me an idea of doing a tournament with the top 64 teams of all time.  I will break these out into 4 brackets, just like the tournament.  I feel the best way to break out the teams is by era.  Overall, I want to find the best team from 1901 to today, 2012.  I don't want to try to start comparing pre 1900.

So I will break out the tournament into 4 time periods.  Division one will be the Deal Ball era, and Ill use 1901 to 1918.  Division two will be the time period of 1919 to 1947.  1947 was the year that black athletes were allowed to play baseball, so that adds a dimension of added competition.  Then to break the last two divisions, I don't have any set event to break them out, so Ill just take the remaining years, (2012-1947 = 65 yrs) and split them in half.  So division three is 1948 to 1979 and Division four is 1980 to today.

To actually simulate the games, I am going to use the Sim Matchup engine from www.Whatifsports.com. There I can play all the games and get full outputs on each.  In rounds 1 and 2, I will play a best of 15 series.  I feel that should be enough to decide a winner accurately.  I will rotate pitchers each game.  In rounds 3 and 4, I will use best of 19 and in rounds 5 and 6, I will use a best of 25.

This is going to take me quite awhile to simulate all of these and report on each, but I am going to try to at least get a few series in each week, so hopefully I can have this done in a few months.
